Scholarships

Ontario Trillium Scholarship

The Ontario Trillium Scholarships (OTS) program is a significant initiative to attract more of the best qualified international students to Ontario for PhD studies. The OTS are to be awarded to international PhD recipients for a maximum of four years. Awards are to be automatically awarded to the student for each of the three years following the first year provided the student maintains good academic standing and continues to meet recipient eligibility requirements.

Each OTS is valued at $40,000 annually and is renewable for an additional three years.

In its inaugural year of the OTS program, the University of Waterloo has been allotted six OTS to award to outstanding qualified international applicants. Read more about the OTS program and winners.

Each Faculty will nominate one student and up to one alternate in the Winter term for Fall admission.

Eligibility & Selection
• recipients must be international students who hold a valid Canadian study permit (should an OTS recipient obtain permanent residency status, s/he will continue to be eligible for the OTS for the balance of his/her renewable OTS for a total of four years)
• recipients must be intending to pursue full-time graduate studies at the doctoral level in a degree granting program;
• recipients must have achieved a first-class average in each of the two years of full-time study prior to being awarded the OTS;
• recipients must not be currently studying at an Ontario postsecondary institution at the undergraduate or graduate level;
• recipients must not have concurrently accepted a scholarship from NSERC (ie. IPS) or OGS and must not concurrently be receiving significant external sponsorships (ie. in excess of $10,000)

Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
The OGS scholarship program is funded by the provincial government. A small number of these awards are available to international students.

Trudeau Foundation Scholarships
The Trudeau Scholars Programme grants up to fifteen new scholarships every year to outstanding doctoral candidates in the social sciences and humanities. The Foundation supports doctoral candidates pursuing research of compelling present-day concern, touching upon one or more of the four themes of the Foundation: human rights and dignity, responsible citizenship, Canada in the world, and people and their natural environment. Trudeau Scholars are actively engaged in their fields, in which they are expected to become leading national and international figures.

Trudeau Scholars are selected through a process that involves nomination by a university, an application supported by references and transcripts, internal and external review and selection panels, an interview, and the formal approval of the Board of Directors.

The assessment of nominees for Trudeau Scholarships focuses on the following criteria: (1) academic achievement at the level of the highest standards of the world's most prestigious doctoral scholarship programs; (2) an outstanding ability to engage in lively exchange with other researchers and scholars; and (3) the intention to work in an area related to one or more of the four themes of the Foundation, and a desire to contribute to public dialogue around those themes.

Scholarships are tenable for three years. Each scholarship is valued at $40,000 per year for three years, plus up to an additional $20,000 annually to support research-related travel. If a Trudeau Scholar concurrently holds other scholarships or fellowships that allow for the accumulation of awards, and if the total value of those external awards exceeds $10,000, the Foundation will subtract the amount over $10,000 from the $40,000 annual stipend.
