At the University of Waterloo, we believe that excellence in graduate studies
is reinforced by the availability of funding to our graduate students so
they can devote their full time and energy to the successful completion
of their studies.
The Graduate Studies Office (GSO) works closely with departments to advertise,
adjudicate and distribute a variety of awards to graduate students. In addition
to the financial support available through government sources, and research
grant support, Waterloo offers a variety of internal and external awards.
Waterloo continues to attract the best students by providing the University
of Waterloo President's
Graduate Scholarship top-up (up to $10,000/year) to both incoming and
continuing graduate students receiving tri-council (NSERC/SSHRC/CIHR) and
provincial (OGS) competition-based scholarships (excluding Vanier).
Internal Awards
Internal awards consist of bursaries, loans, and graduate scholarships,
many of which have been made possible through contributions by Faculty,
staff, retirees, students, alumni, corporations, foundations and the general
public. Many of the internal awards do not require an application; students
are nominated by their departments. Students should see their department
scholarship coordinators for more details.
External Awards
External awards programs are offered by external agencies. A full list
of awards can be found in our searchable scholarship
database. Major external competitions administered by the Graduate Studies
Office (GSO) are:
